Energy Justice Network supports grassroots community efforts to stop dirty energy and waste industry facilities, and to transition to clean energy and zero waste alternatives. Since its founding in 1999, Energy Justice Network has played either a lead or supporting role in numerous grassroots victories against incinerators, power plants, and various other polluting hazards throughout the United States.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Location: Philadelphia area (most work is remote, but need to be present for in-person meetings, events and outreach)
Hours: 40/week, currently funded for 12 months; flexible schedule, though some events will be on evenings and weekends
Compensation rate: $50-65K/year, commensurate with experience

About the Philadelphia Area Campaign: We’re working to end the use of waste incineration, a serious environmental racism problem, particularly in Chester and Camden. Philadelphia is surrounded by five trash incinerators – the worst cluster in the nation – all of which are among the region’s top seven industrial air polluters. Waste incineration is the most expensive and polluting way to make energy or to manage waste – dirtier than burning coal, and worse than directly depositing waste in landfills.
We are looking for an organizer in the Philadelphia area to join our team. The ideal candidate will be a passionate and effective advocate for environmental justice, with a strong understanding of the challenges facing environmental justice communities. We are looking for a creative, organized individual who is committed to building a more equitable and sustainable future.
The Philadelphia area organizer will support and expand on existing campaigns and those of our member groups, to win the soonest possible transition from incineration toward zero waste strategies.
Qualifications & Expectations:
- 4 years organizing experience (paid or volunteer)
- Passionate about environmental injustice
- Strong commitment to building a multiracial, cross-class movement
- Philadelphia area resident
- Valid driver’s license and available car
- Proficient in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Zoom, Google applications, social media, WordPress
- Skilled and comfortable with public speaking
- Strong interpersonal skills; friendly and outgoing demeanor
- Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken
- Punctual, reliable, follows up on commitments
- Experience in project management, with strong attention to detail
- Leadership development experience
- Ability to adjust priorities, manage time, and meet timelines
- Experience working in rapidly changing environments
- Flexible schedule, with ability to attend meetings or other events in evenings or weekends when needed

Core Responsibilities: The Philadelphia Area Organizer will lead recruitment efforts, manage volunteers, organize meetings, meet with decision makers, develop social media visibility (and media visibility more broadly), oversee local organizing activities, and coordinate with the Executive Director.
- BASE-BUILDING
- Build network with allied organizations
- Cultivate relationships with other organizations.
- Set up meetings and present to local groups
- Coordinate and facilitate meetings and other events
- Recruit and manage volunteers
- Outreach to our contacts
- Recruit new people, including occasional, targeted door-to-door outreach and tabling at events
- Build and develop the process of onboarding volunteers
- Support volunteers to become more experienced and powerful organizers and leaders
- MESSAGING
- Help develop messaging and fact sheets for each community
- Help design training and political education materials that will prepare volunteers to organize their communities
- LEGISLATIVE
- Attend public and official meetings
- Schedule meetings with members of municipal and county governments, take notes, advance legislative priorities
- Help prepare action alerts & sign-on letters
- MEDIA
- Track and share media hits related to the campaigns
- Make sure our activities are more visible to media
- SOCIAL MEDIA
- Develop a social media presence throughout the Philadelphia area
- Post updates to website and do regular outreach to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Email lists
- FUNDRAISING
- Contribute to grant writing/fundraising efforts to maintain the position
